3 Major Lessons I've Learned About Solitude

It’s 7:30 am on Sunday morning. There I was, in bed, awakened by my internal body clock. My body and mind felt detached, like a piece of me was floating somewhere, and I would need to search for it. It’s a familiar feeling, although not an unsettling one; rather, it’s a call for me to retreat into solitude.


The night before, I had an absolute blast celebrating a dear friend’s birthday with her closest and dearest.


As someone who gravitates towards solitude (and absolutely cherishes it !), my journey of emerging as my true self and finding fulfilment has had been uniquely shaped by the time I spend alone. I’ve discovered that within the quietness is where I find clarity and alignment with self-discovery and fulfilment.


Yet, while I cherish my time alone, I’ve also learned the importance of making space for meaningful connections with those I cherish. Although I must say, it is an effort that is well worth making.



Here are the 3 major lessons I learned about Solitude within solitude:


1. Solitude Is The Sacred Gift

Solitude is not loneliness but rather the sacred gift of finding companionship within yourself to meet the versions of who you truly are. It is within that space of silence that you are able to retract, reflect, and resummarise the lessons and new perspectives that life has to offer. This process allows for a deeper integration of these insights, helping you discover new layers of your true self and move closer to a sense of fulfilment.


It is also in solitude that you are able to find your greatest strength when facing emotional pain. While it is natural to seek external comfort, it is in those moments of solitude that you can process your pain, finding clarity within the depths of your emotions and thoughts; ultimately emerging wiser.


2. Solitude Is The Sanctuary To Dial Down External Noises

It’s rare to find a companion who truly appreciates the “comfortable silence”; the sort of companion who also values presence over conversation. This is the person who understands that unique, quality moments can also exist without the need for words. Picture being engrossed in your own activities within each other’s presence (I know !). It’s not that I don’t value deep, meaningful conversations or banter; in fact, I’m quite the opposite.


However, it is within solitude that one is able to dial down the external noises and step into clarity and peace. These aren’t just the noises of the physical world, but also the constant unconscious hum of social and digital environments that often clutter inner awareness. When inner awareness is cluttered, one’s inner wisdom becomes clouded.


You see, one’s inner wisdom is the compass for navigating towards true self and fulfilment. Therefore, it is crucial to learn how to dial down external noises.


When my brain starts to feel dense, that’s my signal to retreat into solitude. I wonder what yours is . . .

3. Solitude Recharges Your Energy

Hail my energy ! (Now, picture me dancing around under the moonlight, arms raised, calling my energy back like some kind of caffeine deprived mystical shaman).


Let’s be honest here- sometimes, after a week of “humaning,” it feels like my energy has taken an unannounced vacation, and I no longer feel as if I’m human. So, what do I do . . . ? I throw on my metaphorical feathers, channel my inner energy goddess, and do a little moonlit jig to summon it back. It’s fun, it’s ridiculous, and it works for me- only because I say it works for me.


Jokes aside, the truth is that recharging your energy doesn’t have to be like  how it’s being portrayed on social media by spiritual influencers. Recharging your energy could simply mean diving into a pool, staying in bed all morning, meditating, enjoying a smoothie date alone, or indulging in a spa day. The key point here is finding what resonates with you.

Conclusion: Embracing Solitude as a Path to Fulfilment

Embracing solitude is not about isolating yourself from the world, but rather about taking time to reconnect with your true self within your own sacred space and time. It’s in those moments of tranquility that you find the clarity, strength and energy to navigate life’s curves with wisdom and grace.


While solitude allows you to recharge and realign, it also teaches you the value of meaningful connections. So the next time you feel like as if a part of you is detached, you know that it is time for you to retreat into your sacred time and space !
